As a person I have fallen claim to some seo myths as I am sure you have. Today I want to reveal to you that the “Alt Tag” is a myth. If you ever hear anyone saying it helps improve serp rankings then you should run.
The alt tag used to be a factor for the search engines to properly rank you but that changed a few years back and it now means nothing to the search engines accept more text on your site. While I agree with others that using them to get more text with your keywords on the page can be helpful if you have a massive page, smaller pages need not worry because you really only have to mention your keywords on your page 1 or 2 times and that is plenty.
Using this tag can also spark the search engines interest because it is a change, I have used them before to get the search engines bots to my site because they believe new content has been added. However in the long run that could hurt you as well if your page does not warrant regular changes like a blog does.
Since my blog is after all about MMO and Blogging Tips its only fair to warn you that if your running a blog then DON’T use alt tags ever! Blogs are already equipped and jamb packed full of your keywords in the title, meta tags and in your posts! Not to mention the fact that if you use technorati tags within your blog you are already doing more then enough to rank for general long tail keywords.

Whilst I don’t agree and think that ALT tags are necessary for SEO, I’m not going to argue that point.
What I wanted to say is you shouldn’t tell people not to use ALT tags as they are necessary for W3C and accessibility issues.
If people are really worried about using ALT tags in blogs they should write their ALT tags without their targeted keywords.
BTW, I’m trying to browse some of your articles in the SEO section and I can’t click on any of them to comment etc. Why is that?
I don’t think it matters to SEO one way or another, unless you stuff them full of junk and get a site banned. However, there’s a reason that DTDs typically require alt tags – they are there for accessibility. Not SEO.

Well I have also heard about that alt tag thing, and I think it’s good thing, but it doesn’t help a lot to make your serp positions higher.
I prefer to think of SEO as a traffic tactic and THE biggest of them all. I get maybe 80% or more of my traffic free from them for two websites I hav and so am concentrating now on building this for my newer sites. It lasts for years. Alt tags have an affect on traffic because you maybe reached from someone searching an image on your site..
not only the alt tag but the meta tags appear to be out of favour and some say irrelevant. You should include them because you never know what will change and who knows maybe you could get some valuable traffic form one of the smaller boys who uses the keyword tag??
I see alt tags as a way of helping you reach a better keyword density. Let’s say that it doesn’t make sense to use a long chain keyword frequently enough in your article. The alt tag gives you the ability to add it in without devaluing your content.

I still think Alt Tags are important from SEO Prospective. Whether they help you or not in ranking but still it will be wise to use Alt tags properly.
alt tags and meta data are still important…it’s not a myth…and yes…they don’t have weight when it comes to affecting rankings in the SERPs. BUT a compelling meta description paired with a relevant title tag will help you get more clicks from the SERPs. It’s a fact.
ALt tag helps your images rank better in google images, so this may attract more visitors to your site in addition to those coming by regular keyword search.

Yes, indeed Alt tag really works. It is still important and there is nothing wrong using it properly.
Why not just add alt tags? It is not very hard, and it may or may not help SEO.

I still think ALT tags are important for keyword density. Otherwise Blog software wouldn’t automatically tag images
Been using ALT tags (actually it’s called ALT attribute), since the first day I started SEO. It is both useful for websites and blogs, since robots/spiders cannot read images, we place ALT attribute in exchange for the images. These ALT attribute are then read by the robot/spider, that’s how Google is able to display images related with the search terms you use.
Now, ALT tags are used to place a keyword or two for enhancing “keyword density” of a website’s content. Some webmasters abuse the ALT tag by stuffing many keywords in it resulting to PR and/or rank decrease. ALT tags is useful and effective, the only way it doesn’t work is if you use it the wrong way

Great post with lots of good info, thanks! I myself add alt tags. They are easy to add. I just don’t see the reason to not add them. They may not help with SEO, but they are just so easy to add.

Well… maybe running isn’t the answer but there is a certain satisfaction is pointing out to people that they are completely off thier rocker. I figured out that myth a short while back.
Great article. I agree it doesn’t do anything to help the site. Focus on Meta and Title tags and SEO work. Like everything else the 80/20 rule applies. Those two areas are where you should focus SEM efforts.
