The other day we had a guest post by the FreeLance 2.0 blog, his name got me thinking back to the old days and how I used to make money online. Many of us started by doing basic freelance jobs like forum posting, simple site designs, logos or even banners. Any form of work you do for someone else on the net even being paid to blog is considered freelancing.
I started asking myself is freelancing a really good way to make money online? I mean sure, I used to make a decent wage doing it but does freelancing take our minds off a bigger more important focus such as this blog? To answer this question I had to do some deep thinking and I have come to a decision, to put it bluntly the answer is yes and no.
Way back in the day I used to make templates for CubeCart as well as WordPress and any other CMS system that came my way. I made decent money off these charging anywhere from $35.00 to $225.00 per design and template depending how advanced and time consuming it was to create them.
I sometimes did the $225.00 designs in under 30 minutes which is basically $450.00 per hour. Not to bad except for the fact that those only came to me every now and again so it was not a real steady income stream like I need to pay bills. You may be wondering what this all means, let me try to sum it up with just a few simple words. Freelancing can work but not as a full time job unless you do the one thing I never did.
I never took the designs I created and started making a nice deep portfolio to show future customers I had the snap to make it happen. To this day I still do 75% or more of my own design work because I know if I do it I will get the results I want, however if I had created a portfolio from the start of my best stuff by now I might be running a web design company instead of this blog.
It really comes down to and depends on what you are considering success online. Anyone can make a big chunk of change at one time but its those that make it full time and never slow up only getting bigger that we should look up to!
What do you think, can you make money by freelancing?

Depends on how much effort you’re willing to put into it. I make $1000+/month freelancing. One concept I consider many people forget is that blog entrepreneurs are considered freelancers by definitions. You’re self employed, you make money via a non 9 -5 job, and you’re liable in the end.
I prefer to do related but separate work in my freelance life … I manage PPC accounts as a freelancer, rather than doing SEO work.
I do a lot of programming freelance work, and sometimes it pays well, but sometimes it doesn’t. I have a day job, though, which is what pays the bills. Freelance is what finances my online stuff.
I always used to freelance but was not good enough and did not make a penny. But that was when I was like 7 – 12.
9 -5 job will probably make you more money in the beginning but as you settle in and get more contacts (regular and better paying) you’ll never look back, just my 2 cents.
Stick with 9-5 for now. It takes a while but once you get lots of contacts-client base then your away laughing. It took me a while though, but boy it pays off now! Sounds like you do some quality work also.
Freelancing is an excellent way to make money. There are so many people on the internet looking for people that can provide a service for a need that they have. Freelancers fill that need.
