The other day I was talking to a friend and he was talking about going to work for a SEO Firm so he could add that to his resume. That then raised the question to me, do you really need to work for a firm to get jobs as a SEO?

Do You Need To Work For A Company To Be A Great SEO?
After thinking it over I have come to a decision and I stand behind the answer your about to read. Before I spill the beans and give you my answer let me explain why I believe what I believe.
I want you to think about this, lets say you’re a big company like Dell.com but lets say your just starting out with the seo to your dell product website. Your already a multi millon dollar company making a income that most only dream of, but if I emailed you saying I can do SEO for you and here is some proof of past customers success and I can do it for you to!
Do you for one second think that Dell will give you a second look? What if a company sent the same type of email to dell, would they give them a second look?
To answer the question No, dell would not give either a second look UNLESS you have something to offer Dell that no one else can. Proof of ranking success is all that you need to get a SEO job, you don’t need medals or badges from a SEO firm.
Just show the proof and if they like your results BAMB you got the job. It really is that simple! What do you think? Can you get a SEO job without working for a SEO firm? Tell us your thoughts and ideas below for all to see!

For me, it doesn’t really matter if you’ve worked in an SEO firm before. What’s important is you know what you’re doing and you have your own SEO ideas and not just copying what other so called SEO experts are saying.

I agree with that!
That’s a good question. I technically haven’t worked for a firm, and just have my own blog / business site (and a couple of other small sites) ranking for some terms. I have gotten a couple of big job offers… and one of them asked for a list of sites that I’ve done.
I’m compiling a list of sites for a company I worked for (thought that was mostly SEO.)
I’m sure experience makes it easier – especially when someone is paying you for that experience
On the other hand, if you have the results, you will definitely find it easier to close a deal.
The bottom line is that it’s dependant on your skill as a salesman, and rapport with your potential client. People can sell snake oil if they know how to do it right, and selling SEO is alot easier.
I agree completely. Real work experience with proof will go much farther than just regular job experience. Just because you worked for an SEO firm doesn’t mean you know jack about SEO. I used to know an MCSE certified technician who didn’t know how to share a printer over a network. Grr…
Experience is experience, it doesn’t matter where you get it. That said, working for a firm is likely to give you a lot of experience very quickly, which may be of value in itself.
I know a lot of SEO experts learn about SEO as they go along in the SEO world. I learn a lot about SEO as I search about it in the search engines, and while working on my blog.
I want to raise my self
