Today it felt like a good day to bring up this subject, I have been learning ways myself to encourage more comments and today is your lucky day if you want to do the same! So far these have worked great for me and be sure to comment below if you know of any other ways!
Alright, so we know that creating a community on our blog is important but how do we actually go about doing it? That’s what we are going to learn today, come along and be sure to write these down or print them on so you never forget!
Idea 1. The first thing to do is simply Ask for them, believe it or not people will be more inclined to comment on a post if you give them a reason to. Ask them to give you more opinions / ideas in the comments. Oh and don’t be afraid of a little heat in the comments area either, people will still visit your blog even if they hate your guts just so they can give there opinions! I have seen bloggers who can barely spell and who have only 25 subscribers but all of them comment because they like to correct the poster and it makes them feel important. It doesn’t matter how you get comments so long as you do!
Idea 2. Another way to get more comments is by commenting first. If you write a post don’t be afraid to post a comment right after you make the initial post saying something like “Oh, I forgot to mention…” it gets things going and again you can ask a question on that first comment to get things going.
Idea 3. One way I have found to get more comments is by simply offering a prize to the top commenter each month. Sure you can run a cold hard cash contest and I have but I’m finding that those people come on for a couple weeks then leave until you have another cold hard cash contest, id rather offer a prize pack of like ebooks or a wordpress theme to the top commenter. Something they can really sink there teeth into you know?
Idea 4. I also have found that videos spark a lot of interest in blog posts as well as comments. By posting a video you could get more comments because people can comment on what you did in the video, what you were wearing etc…
Idea 5. My final and last tip is to be active on your own blog commenting. In idea 2 I suggested being the first commenter but I also recommend that you comment on what your commenter’s say. The threaded comments plugin works good for this but I don’t use the plugin for other reasons. However its a good plugin if you want to create a real sense of community!
How about the rest of you? What are some of your ideas to get more comments on your blog? I am always open to more ideas so please comment below and tell me what you think!

Good post Shannon, those are some good ways to encourage interaciton….but….number 2 is suspect and borderline desperate lol, the other 4 are great though. Videos, prizes for the top commentator, asking for responses, and getting involved with folks who respond are all great ways to increase your comments.
I’m not feelin number 2 though man lol hahaha…but that’s just me. Good job buddy
November 20th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Great Tips! Thanks
November 20th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Thanks guys, your right Joe it is a sign of desperation but ive seen people respond to it so…
November 20th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Hahaha, well…just cuz folks do it don’t mean you need to put your stamp on it! Unless it’s something you’ve done? lol…it’s all good man, whatever works, I like the others though, great job…I just can’t see being the first guy to comment on my own post
November 20th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Well I more or less meant add something you forgot to the post, when people see a comment on a post (no matter who created it) if its good they will respond imo.
November 20th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Gotcha buddy! It’s all good man….we can agree to disagree on that one and still be friends lol, I still love ya!
November 20th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
LOL I wasn’t disagreeing
Just stating my opinion!
Luv ya sammich man!
November 20th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
stumbled upon your post… been considering putting a blog on my site as well but am thinking that there could be flamers discrediting the actual product because most commenters are the haters.
November 20th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
That may be HJ, but remember you can moderate every comment to ensure that does not happen
Its more work but it only takes a few minutes!
Just be sure to install the comment spam protection plugins and such and you should be fine!
November 20th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
What do you power your blog with? I keep reading the beest way is to use wordpress but don’t use their servers and run it local to your own server which is where you would get the best results.
November 20th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Yes I use wordpress on my own server!
Its the best and only true way to run a great blog as its the biggest, best and its 100% free!
You could hire me to install your blog and customize it to match your current site if you want

Awesome ideas there. I have to agree with Joe about number 2, but it is a way to encourage comments on a post and that is exactly what this post is all about!
November 21st, 2008 at 12:25 am
I know Shannon!
November 21st, 2008 at 1:06 am
Nice blog. I will forward this post to my friends. Thanks
November 21st, 2008 at 2:58 am
This is a great article … I try really hard to end each post with a bunch of questions … I don’t know if it helps or not … do people really answer them? Sometimes I will have a list like this and tell readers if they can add to it I’ll add it to the post (with credit) … and Joe … I left a “special” comment for you on my latest post (about the contest). *huGs* to all

Wow cyrus Jay, whats up? 4 comments in a row.
Thanks though!
November 21st, 2008 at 1:43 pm
another way to encourage people to comment is by rewarding them with some prizes, but we have to monitor the comments too so that the winner is only for those who make the quality comments. Maybe Top comments of the week will be good, because that will encourage them to come back to our blog everyday.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Thought maybe cyrus jay … was just confirming that your ideas worked!!! LOL
@ busby seo ~ so for a contest do you mean rewarding the person with the most helpful comment?
November 21st, 2008 at 2:34 pm
@suzanne – Yes, we have to rewards those who are giving the good comments, and it should be limited to one person, it can be more..This will build up a trust between you and the rest of the readers.
November 21st, 2008 at 2:52 pm
True, but the post was how to get comments at first not really specific quality type of comments.
But yoru right in the fact that prizes do work well!
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:19 am
Suzanne – Nah.. Cyrus just wants the free PR3 backlink in his top commentators widget
I’m sure he would post that same amount of comments if your blog was PR3 and had this widget !
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:22 am
Ahhhh … I see! Well … I never even noticed that plugin here (sleep deprivation) … I do have the PR3 … so should I pass on that widget??? I’ve thought about adding it … but I’m so crazy right now *sigh* … maybe after the contest.
November 22nd, 2008 at 3:19 am
Add it asap.. I’m sure i’ll be on top on your blog too !
Muwhahaha!

@ Monty ~ At least you didn’t leave out the word “blog” … ROTFLMAO!!! You’re funny! *huGs*
November 24th, 2008 at 2:44 am
Yes I think the best way is to put your comment first, so that you can lead others to your conversation about a topic.
November 28th, 2008 at 12:55 am
I don’t think it’s desperate to start a discussion. When there are no comments, people may be unsure if they should comment or not. I don’t usually watch videos on blogs but I do like seeing little clipart as it seems inviting and breaks up eye strain too. I have seen blogs where people bribe you if you have more than x posts your comments will be followed, but that seems silly to me.
November 28th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
@staying sober – i agree with you. Why do we really force our self to give comments for certain amount of comments. As for me, i will only give comment based on the subject matter. If the subject are interesting enough for me to comment, i will give it a shoot.

Everyone wants that its blog should be commented and visited. The tips in the post are very valuable for visitors to be impressed to comment. Apart from this, one should focus on its blogs’ ranking in SE. A high rank blog has high probability for visitors and hence comment. Thanks for tips.

Two other methods that can help to encourage comments are allowing DoFollow links (removing default nofollow attributes so that “link juice” is passed to the sites) and installing the KeywordLuv plugin, which significantly helps commenters with SEO because it allows them to choose the anchor text for links.
Overall, it is a good thing to encourage comments because the extra content provided by other people adds more keywords to your posts, which in turn brings in more traffic from the search engines without costing you any more time than it takes to write the original post.
