Keyworded Domain Name Importance
Over the last couple of years in doing seo I have seen so many questions flying around the net about whether or not a domain which contains your top keywords is more beneficial to have over not having it. Today is your lucky day if you have been wondering the same things and today its clear up time!
So we are talking about a keyword domain such as www.keyword.com or www.keyword1-keyword2.com versus www.nonekeyword.com domains.
Which domain type is best for the search engines?
These types of questions are asked all to often in the world of SEO and it’s a simple question to answer. I actually cannot believe it has not been covered before in a place for people to find their answers… So Disappointing!!!
To answer the first part of this two fold question No, the engines don’t care if your domain is keyworded or not because you can create sub pages with your keywords instead. All the engines really care about is the power being pointed directly to your website / domain or sub pages that are keyworded.
A keyworded domain comes in handy for branding purposes and also for a catchy business name of which you can read our great article on.
But when it comes to the search engines there are so many workarounds that ensuring your domain name is keyworded is not really necessary, however if you can get your domain name keyword then I would highly suggest you do as it is a great way to brand yourself as the authority on a subject.
To answer the second part of this question which was…
Which domain type is best for search engines?
Again it depends on what you’re going for, branding is big in the search engines eyes and keyword domain names are a great way to do build your brand. But also having a catchy business name that makes no sense can yield awesome results as you can see by InfectedByBugs.com, Google, Yahoo and MSN!
Don’t get caught in the trap that you won’t rank well without a keyworded domain, countless examples of where this does not exist are everyone on the net. Keyword domains don’t do anything for your seo ranks other than branding for easy remembrance for your visitors.

I have often heard quite the opposite, though. There are so many people out there that preach on the importance of getting your keywords in your domain, simply for SEO purposes. While a non-keyword domain can probably do quite well with the right traffic/backlink/other seo formula in place, I believe that a keyword domain will still help quite a bit for those sites that are still new and don’t have the traffic and other seo areas built up as well. This would be a great case study…

There are arguments to be made on both sides, but as a general rule … if you’re building a flagship site, the center of your business and financial empire, for which you’ll be creating a ton of content and building a lasting brand … then call it Google, or Yahoo, or Amazon, or whatever.
But if you’re building a quick hit niche site, which will eventually become one of many set & forget sites in your portfolio, you’d do better with keywords in your domain name.
