Did you know that Google hates people the Buy and Sell links to alter there search index? OK, so its old news but did you know there are ways around making Google Frown upon your seo efforts?
Have you ever asked and SEO company to work on your site and help you gain rankings? If you happened to tell them the ways you have built your sites rank thus far (buying links) they probably ignored your emails or replied back saying something along the lines of “Sorry but we don’t have the time to work on your project”. If you have been told anything along these lines don’t worry I’m about to turn your Frown up-side down!
Seriously though, Google is alright with you building links, they just don’t want you to do it to the point that you rank in terms you should not be ranking in. For instance my blog ranking in the term “Hot Dogs In New york” makes absolutely no sense. I should be ranking in terms like “make money online, make money blog, blog to make money” etc…
So you ask? How can I rank correctly and avoid unrelated rankings to my site? Well that is what today’s post is all about. Before I go any further though I have to say (I think that’s the longest post intro I have ever typed!) ok now onto the serious part of this post.
Instead of just telling you what not do do like I did back in my 2008 Link Building Donts today I’m going to list what you can and should be doing. Its a ancient method you have probably heard before but trust me when I say “It’s The Only Legit Way To Build Links The Engines Like”.
Link-bait 101 - That’s right people, its all about link-baiting! When you hear link-bait you instantly think something bad because it says the two things google really hates… “Links & Baiting” However the truth is Google would love it if everyone would simply link-bait instead of buying links. Why? Because link-baiting closely follows how there search engine wants to discover sites and rank them.
Let me explain…
Here is how link-baiting basically works, you start off and create an awesome resource, video, page, article, download or whatever you want to use as you bait. After you have this thing created you somehow get it into the hands of the masses and if they like it they will return your hard work by linking to you (generally with your chosen anchor text). Pretty simple formula really….
Thats it, link-baiting truly is as simple as that, you just need to figure out how to get your content or video to the masses and for that you can read my other posts on the blog that talk all about it!

I’ve being trying to get articles on one of my football websites linked to by football forums and other websites. Its hard work and takes more time than i’ve sometimes got, but if you end up with some websites linking to your site that have high traffic then its got to be worth the time and effort.
I’m in a niche that can be quite easy to get linked to by other football websites. I write my own unique content so there’s my first advantage, plus there’s hundreds of football websites that don’t want to write there own content so will create RSS feeds etc and find stories from all over the web to put on their website.
BTW, how did you do the google frown image, photoshop or did you just find it on the web?

This is a very good post. Link baiting is spoken about all the time, but many people just do not understand it as there are so many different meanings for it now.
“ou somehow get it into the hands of the masses” – that’s like that old cartoon with the mathematical formulas all over a blackboard and a cloud in the middle that says “and then a miracle happened”

You’re absolutely right, link baiting is a good way to get links … the challenge is to create linkbait for fundamentally dull businesses (water pumps, safety equipment, drain cleaning, etc.)
Yeah, I’ve heard a lot about linkbait to create backlinks, but the challenge is finding the right video/article that people will spread. It can be tough to do that in certain niches… Although, it’s a piece of cake if you’re running a Britney Spears blog or something.

how about 3 way links, i have heard they are not that easy for Google to find and if you do your homework correct which i never got to, then you can have some good number of one way links back to your website
Great post Shannon. However, my personal experience is that linkbait is more effective if you write controversial posts. You often end up getting a flurry of links from blogs in *the same niche* within 24 hours as your article is literally hot property.
I’m still learning the art of writing controversial articles and still couldn’t really grasp what constitutes a good controversy..

This is a good basic definition of link baiting. I sort of had an idea about it – And now that I understand the concept more, my mind is trying to come up with some intriguing way to use this knowledge. Maybe something about book publishing and that its dead. . .
