Yesterday I went ahead renewed the InfectedByBugs.com domain name for another 9 years! (Yes I am here for the long-haul and all those who back ordered my domain to steal it can forget it!)

Now I know some of you are asking “Why does this matter, does it help anything? Why not just renew at the end of each year instead and save some money for other promotion for the blog?”.
Actually I have a few pointers as to why its important to renew your domains for longer then just 1 or 2 years. I went the full 9 year option but anything above 5 is good in my opinion. You see the search engines and some other programs take your domain age but also how much longer your domain is registered for into account in giving you rankings.
For instance I have done tests and found that aged non dropped domains instantly rank better in the search engines then a new domain, even if that new domain is the perfect keywords you want to rank for the aged name still won out. Obviously that changes as you get into deeper seo and promotion but I’m talking at the start only.
I know this may sound weird and even confusing but trust me when I say registering the domain longer then you need to is worth every penny. Its also a good selling point if you ever decided to sell your site that way the buyer doesn’t have to worry about the name dropping any time soon.
This was just a quickie update but I encourage all of you to renew your domains as long as you can.
Oh and BTW be sure to subscribe to my blog to help me beat Tom from StandOutBlogger.com as you all know if I win this contest with Tom I have a special prize pack I am going to give out to the best member of my blog and his so its worth helping me win! Trust Me, Its Worth It!

It sure is a big deal and a good idea to renew one’s domain, because you can get a discount for a long-term contract, and will also have peace of mind about control of your website.

This is the first time I hear such thing, well I don’t know really is it true. Well i would try this, but to renew for more than 5 years is a bit expensive, because you never know will you run your site for such a long time

I would rather renew for long term as well. I always start with one year and if I am able to develope the domain over that year, will extend for longer in hopes of a sale.

Thanks for the tip. I haven’t heard of this before so it’s a new one to me but I can see how it makes some sense! I will certainly consider trying this in the near future…

Another advantage to renew domain for long-term is, we won’t be effected if in the next year the registrar service increase the domain price, because we have registered for long time. Anyway why you name your domain Infected by bugs ?

Good post and an interesting point to consider. I think that search engines consider trust to be a major factor in your site’s ranking criteria. It would make sense that a person who has registered their site for a long time period is less likely to be a “fly-by-night” type and also offer better visitor experience than someone whose domain is registered over a shorter period. Beyond that, as has been mentioned, registering your domain years in advance will also save you money over the long term.

Good advice. I have a question though. Do you think people should get their twitter names now, and could they be bought and sold later like domain names?

August 17th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
I think you are absolutely correct that SE’s (especially google) look at the length of time that the doamin is registered. I personally try to register all mine for at least 5 years. I know that it’s more of a financial investment, but I think that Google takes that into consideration as well. Most domains that people use for MFA or splog sites are only registered for a year.
