Title Tag Basics
The title tag has often been used to spam search engines, therefore you need to be careful that you don’t just list all of your top keywords in row. It should be in an organized fashion like the search engines want. They have an actual method for this which we will show you later on. This method tells the search engine what your business name is and what your top keywords are. Then it tells the search engines that this is why you believe you should rank for this term.
The title tag itself is not that complex to arrange, but knowing when to say enough is enough can always be difficult. A lot of people want to try and cram as many keywords in the title as possible on their homepage. But what they don’t understand is that you can easily use several sub pages to obtain great rankings for all your keywords without raising any flags to the search engines for duplicate content and/or a spamming site.
Without further ado let’s learn how to assemble our title tag so the search engines will be happy. Let’s get started right now!
1. The first rule of thumb when creating your title tag is to ensure that you list the company name/business name before listing key words which Google has stated clearly on their website needs to be done.
2. The second rule of thumb that I would like to talk about is the keywords, the keywords are what is going to tell the search engines how to rank your site. So it’s important that these be assembled correctly. Below is an example of a correct title tag and below that is the incorrect version that you should avoid.
- InfectedByBugs.com | making money online, sales marketing & more!
- making money online - sales marketing & more!
As you can see from the two examples provided the first one looks more professional to the human eye, when creating a title tag you should take this into consideration. Think of the search engines like human beings, they read and write just like a human would or as close to us as possible. Therefore we can only assume that in order to make the search engines happy we first need to ensure that our customers are happy with what they read.
The title tag should catch the attention of your customers and search engines as if it was a sales letter title. The title is simply outlining what you’re selling, as you can see in my example I first declared the business name, then I tell the search engines that my terms are making money online and sales marketing.
If you look at the second example you’ll see that the company name is never declared and the keywords are simply spammed on by listing the first keywords set and then the second only divided by a - in between them. Again using the example as if the search engines are humans, imagine if you went to the search engines and saw the second title like the business name was not declared and it didn’t really clearly state what it’s for.
Would you click on the ad were title tag that looked that way?
Chances are you would probably pass it on by, not because they don’t offer what you want but because it doesn’t look like a professional company put it together just for you.
Okay so now you know how to do a proper title tag but how do you contain the title tag on your HTML page? Luckily for you that’s the easiest part of the whole job! All you need do is load up your index page or whichever page you’re working on in your site. Then in the source code simply find the head tags which will look something like this:
Once you found them in between them they should be the title tag, there’s probably something there right now but it probably doesn’t describe what your site is about. So let’s change that!
As you can see in my example simply replace “your business name” with your actual business name .com then list your keywords with commas or dashes in between them.
You will be starting and ending with the HTML title tag.
Hopefully this example has shed some light on how important the title tag is to search engines. I hope you’ll take it to heart and apply these seo lessons to all of your major websites. But don’t leave the small ones out either, Google especially like small websites that are done correctly. And they will give more authority to them even over a high page rank website if it’s better content wise and seo wise!
How to make money with it!
Okay so you may be wondering how to make money using the title tag!
Good question and luckily for you I have the answer, the title tag is what’s going to help you get ranked in the search engines. Therefore the title tag will only help to make you money if you put the time in and get ranked! Using the title tag on a brand-new or small website can easily help you to get ranked in what we call long tail keywords, long tail keywords are keywords made up of three words or more. It’s safe to assume that long tail keywords are going to be pretty easy to get ranked for.
As you can see my long tail keyword is making money online. While mine is a pretty tough term with just a little work I could rank within the first to fifth page in the search engines within just days of getting some links. Therefore it’s also safe to assume that because I can rank easily in my term you can to!
If you follow the steps that I have provided and you did your title tag so it’s seo friendly, then your set, just sit back and watch the traffic and sales grow without any effort on your part. Another thing you could do is add adsense on your website, to learn more about adsense please check out our adsense for beginners article which is coming soon!

Have you found that it makes a difference whether you use pipes, dashes, colons, or other punctuation to separate the terms in your Title tags?
